GEOMAGNETIC STORM, NOW! A G2-class geomagnetic storm is underway and intensifying on Aug. 27. This is sparking some of the first visible auroras in months around the Arctic Circle. "Tonight, we saw some really intense auroras over Lake Storsjön," reports Göran Strand, who sends this picture from Östersund, Sweden:

SUNSPOT TURNS AWAY FROM EARTH: Sunspot AR2403 is approaching the western limb of the sun. Although the sunspot is no longer directly facing Earth, it still poses a threat for geoeffective explosions. As long as the sunspot remains visible, solar flares from AR2403 can potentially cause radio blackouts and radiation storms. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on Aug. 27th.
