St. Patrick's Day Storm / Solar Update
March 17th, 2015 is turning out to be a very lucky day for sky watchers. A Severe G4 Level (KP=8) Geomagnetic Storm was observed following the passage of a coronal mass ejection (CME). Solar wind speeds increased to near 700 km/s and the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) pointed sharply south (-20 to -25nT) for long durations, thus helping to intensify storm conditions. Sky watchers at middle to high latitudes should be alert for additional aurora displays during the next 24 hours once it is dark outside. Additional sub-storming will be possible should solar wind conditions cooperate. See the update below for fantastic aurora imagery. On the sun, region 2297 continues to decay as it approaches the west limb. Solar activity declined to much lower levels. The chances for a strong solar flares are on the decline. A few other sunspots are now present and should be numbered 2302 and 2303 later today.

Good morning folks. Below is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Monday. Solar activity during the past 24 hours was moderate. Region 2297 produced a couple of low level M-Flares, including an M1.6 at 10:58 UTC (March 16). Despite being in a gradual state of decay, the active region will remain a threat for C-Flares and perhaps additional isolated M-Flares. A new sunspot is turning into view off the northeast limb and we will get a better look at it during the next 24 hours. No Earth directed coronal mass ejections were observed during the past day. Solar wind speeds increased to just above 400 km/s and the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been pointing mostly north on Monday morning. Proton levels streaming past our planet reached to near minor (S1) radiation storm levels. A coronal mass ejection (CME) observed this past weekend could deliver a glancing blow to our geomagnetic field within 48 hours. Sky watchers at high latitudes should remain alert for visual aurora displays.

March 12, 2015 - 'Chemtrails', Solar Updates, Hot Headlines

Good morning folks. Here is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Thursday. Solar activity during the past 24 hours was high with one X-Flare and four M-Flares detected around sunspot 2297. The X2.2 event on Wednesday associated with a Type II radio emission likely produced a coronal mass ejection, however due to the lack of available coroagraph imagery, it is hard to determine an Earth directed component at this time. NOAA/SWPC believe that based on the flare location and radio emission, at least a small portion of the plasma cloud may be directed our way with a shock passage possible on Friday. Other activity around region 2297 includes an impulsive M3.2 at 04:46 UTC, an M1.6 at 11:50 UTC and M1.4 at 12:14 UTC. More flaring will be possible during the next 24 hours due to the complex magnetic layout of the sunspot group. A new sunspot numbered 2299 located in the southeast quadrant produced a C7 flare and will continue to be monitored. Sky watchers at high latitudes should be alert for aurora displays during the next several days. A number of coronal mass ejections from the previous 72 hours may deliver a glancing blow to our geomagnetic field and could lead to elevated geomagnetic activity.

March 11, 2015 - X-Flare, CME Impact, Eruptions, Popular Headlines

Good morning. Here is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Wednesday. Solar activity during the past 24 hours was moderate with a number of M-Flares detected around sunspot 2297. This includes an M2.9 at 00:02 UTC (March 11), an M1.8 at 07:18 UTC and an M2.6 at 07:57 UTC. Neither of these flares looks to have been eruptive, meaning a noteworthy coronal mass ejection (CME) is unlikely. The active region remains magnetically complex with a Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic configuration and may produce additional solar flares of the moderate to strong variety. A filament located in the northwest quadrant lifted off beginning at 06:30 UTC Wednesday morning and may have flung a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Updated coronagraph imagery is required to determine this and an update will be provided once available.

Another solar flare detected around region 2297. The latest event was a moderate M4.5 solar flare peaking at 14:33 UTC Monday morning.
