A Glorious Example of Women Empowerment: worn [BUT NOT] forgotten

Women empowerment can be seen in many forms. One of which is empowerment in the business sector. An industry that thrives fluidly with much aid from women would be the Las Vegas casino industry. Such sector continually survives not only in the revenues acquired from the games which is a phenomenon similar to the increase of casino websites like partycasino, but also from the dedicated feminine workforce of Nevada. Recent demographics show that 51.3% of the labor force the casino industry employs are comprised of women. Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat, and Poker dealers’ positions are astonishingly filled with more women as casino owners consider females to be more detail-oriented. Dealing for these games not only improves one’s dexterity but also one’s agile decision-making, since speed is a main factor of each casino entertainment. With this fact in mind, it is fortunate that there is the gradual emergence of empowerment groups in Vegas such as that of defining: WOMEN Network. This group specifically aims to encourage women to start their own businesses (whether as part-time or full blast), and in the process be able to acquire referral networks in turn.

As fate would have turned out, one of its active local members Jodi Makrnasky, along with her husband Steve chanced upon a lucrative business by accident. In 2007, Steve caught himself folding his favourite vintage sports team shirts from Philadelphia. Upon realizing that parting with these precious mementos would definitely break his heart, he suddenly thought of taking a simple picture of a neatly-stacked pile of these shirts from his own collection. Amazed by how nostalgic the photograph appeared, he used this iconic shot as a holiday postcard sent to friends back in his’ old hometown. With the astonishing volume of wonderful remarks it has received and with the encouragement of Jodi, the husband-and-wife tandem decided to launch worn [BUT NOT] forgotten.

The couple then started from a small website selling images of vintage sport shirts that are stacked according to a specified city team. When sports enthusiasts got a hold of the site, Jodi and Steve suddenly received tons of orders and even requests for school-based teams to be added to their roster of products. With a high demand for these nostalgic keepsakes, the duo gradually collected more vintage team garbs to be used for the photos they release. Currently, they have already collected a whopping 25 huge tubs of various shirts and a portfolio of 300 images that customers can choose from. As “defining: WOMEN Network” aims to revolutionize that women should be treated not only as equals but as co-innovators in the society; the continuous success of “worn [BUT NOT] forgotten” is indeed a glorious example.

I want to suck your....electricity?
Compiled by Zach Royer | May 29th, 2012  8:45PM HAST | Apparently Apparel

There's a vampire on the loose. Whether you're at work, at home or out on the town, this vampire is taking a bite out of your wallet and harming the environment. But, there's no need to barricade the house and stock up on garlic just yet. This vampire works entirely though your electrical outlets and stopping this monster can be as easy as pulling a few plugs.

The villain in question is vampire power, also known as standby power and phantom load, from what is called a vampire device. You can also find it referred to as vampire energy, leaking energy, wall warts, standby loss, idle current, phantom power, ghost load, ghost charge, and vampire load.  The terms refers to the electricity many gadgets and appliances waste just by being plugged in (even if they're switched off). After all, what do you think your cell-phone charger does all day while it's plugged into the wall? If it's warm when you get home from work, then it's been using electricity -- even if it had nothing to charge.

Individually, your rechargeable electric toothbrush may not put that much strain on the local power plant, but the big picture is far more troubling. In the United States alone, vampire power costs consumers more than $3 billion a year [source: Energy Information Administration]. Over time, many microwaves and televisions actually consume more electricity during the hours they're not in use than the times you're actually using them to heat up dinner and watch your favorite show.

How do you fight off the ravages of vampire power? In this article, you'll learn why this energy loss happens and how to slay it once and for all.

Job: Build cosmic outposts.

Hiring: 2025

Trend: President Obama says that astronauts will reach an asteroid by 2025. Soon we’ll be mining precious metals and making rest-stops to Mars, projects that require buildings and vehicles that can withstand everything from subzero temperatures to extreme radiation. Learning to keep people alive in materials-starved space could help Earth-dwellers, too. “Extreme environments provide lessons for everywhere,” says Larry Bell, a space architect at the University of Houston. “How do you do more with less? What is recyclable?”

Education: A master’s in space architecture, currently available only at the University of Houston

Heidemarie Schwermer, a 69-year-old woman from Germany, gave up using money 15 years ago and says she’s been much happier ever since.

Heidemarie’s incredible story began 22 years ago, when she, a middle-aged secondary school teacher emerging from a difficult marriage, took her two children and moved to the city of Dortmund, in Germany’s Ruhr area. One of the first things she noticed was the large number of homeless people, and this shocked her so much that she decided to actually do something about it. She had always believed the homeless didn’t need actual money to be accepted back into society, only a chance to empower themselves by making themselves useful, so she opened a Tauschring (swap shop), called “Gib und Nimm” (Give and Take).

Her small venture was a place where anyone could trade stuff and skills for other things and skills they needed, without a single coin or banknote changing hands. Old clothes could be traded in return for kitchen appliances, and car service rendered in return for plumbing services, and so on. The idea didn’t really attract many of Dortmund’s homeless, because, as some of them told her to her face, they didn’t feel an educated middle-class woman could relate to their situation. Instead, her small shop was assaulted by many of the city’s unemployed and retired folk eager to trade their skills and old stuff for something they needed. Heidemarie Schwermer’s Tauschring eventually became somewhat of a phenomenon in Dortmund and even prompted its creator to ask herself some questions about the life she was living.
